Target 5: By 2022, the rate of loss, degradation and fragmentation of Swaziland’s natural habitats is at least halved, and where feasible brought close to zero.
Current status: The 2013 State of The Environment Report highlighted a number factors as major threats to the country’s biodiversity. These included unsustainable and unregulated harvesting, land transformation, soil erosion, alien plant invasion, bush encroachment and pollution. Efforts are in place to reduce these pressures through a range of initiatives supported by legislation, however more needs to be done.
Strategic Initiative 1: Determine the status of the country’s natural habitats and ecosystems.
Strategic Initiative 2: Reduce the loss, degradation and fragmentation of natural habitats by half or if possible to zero.
