Socio-Economic Considerations

Socio-Economic Considerations

Article 27 allows for parties to take into account socio-economic considerations (SECs) arising from the impact of living modified organisms on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.  Particular regard is given to the value of biological diversity to indigenous and local communities. There is however the condition that inclusion of SECs in decision-making is done in a manner that is consistent with the country’s other international obligations.
