RDNA technology offers a number of benefits over rDNA technology.
- Elimination of linkage drag: With conventional breeding and selection, undesirable genes are often dragged along with the gene of interest making it necessary to invest additional time in removing them. rDNA technology is more precise as only the gene of interest is inserted.
- Movement of genes between unrelated species: With conventional breeding, crosses can only be carried out between closely related, compatible species. Crosses between distantly related individuals often result in sterile hybrids and in some cases the resulting embryo does not persist. rDNA technology enables transfer of genes even between unrelated species.
