The National Biosafety Advisory Committee

The National Biosafety Advisory Committee (NBAC) is a technical committee composed of a range of specialists. Members of the NBAC have been appointed through a Government Gazette (Legal Notice No. 130 of 2013: Appointment of the National Biosafety Advisory Committee). The main function of the NBAC is to conduct risk assessment and to provide scientific advice and technical assistance to the CNA.Other functions include:

  • Review of Risk Management procedures for approved applications
  • Providing guidance on:
    • Containment measures
    • Limitations on duration of authorisations
    • Safe transport
    • Development of guidelines for the safe transport, confined trials and commercial release of GMOs and their products in line with accepted international standards;
    • Developing standards for occupational safety for workers involved with modern biotechnology applications.
