The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its key provisions
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) governs transboundary movement (i.e. across national boundaries) of LMOs derived from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The CPB was adopted on 29 January 2000 and opened for signature in May 2000 in Nairobi. It entered into force on 11 September 2003, ninety days after the 50th signature of ratification.
