The National Biosafety Registry

The Biosafety Act also established the National Biosafety Registry within SEA to be manned by the Registrar and other staff.The Functions of the Registrar are:

  • To receive and screen applications for completeness
  • To forward applications to the NBAC,
  • To issue permits for applications approved by the NBAC
  • Maintain a database of all applications received as well as modern biotechnology activities being run in the country.

The Act further requires the Registrar to ensure that modern biotechnology applications being run are in compliance with conditions of the permits and where there has been breach empowers him to authorise inspectors to destroy the GMOs involved.
