Aquatic systems
Aquatic systems: Included here are rivers, streams and wetlands. It is the smallest and least well known of the country’s ecosystems.
- Significance:Aquatic systems provide critical services such as water, food and are also useful for flood control.
- Status: Only 2% of this ecosystem is formally protected. An additional 1% is informally protected.
- Threats: Major threats to the ecosystem include:
- Urbanization,
- Alien invasive plant species,
- Erosion and ,
- Unsustainable utilization patterns.
